Discharge Trays

Below are three discharge trays that I have acquired over the years. A vintage Trinity tray, Trinity Real Time 2 and the Integy Indi Activator.

The vintage Trinity tray has capacity for 1 - 7 cells, and its brackets that hold the cells are polar independent - there is no negative or positive. The only hitch being there is no clear indication other than temperature that the cells have discharged.

The Real Time 2 had the same polar independence as the vintage tray and can discharge 1 - 6 cells. Discharge is indicated by a light for each cell which allows you to monitor the state of your packs. If one light stays on longer or goes out earlier than the others you have identified a potential problem. The RT2 also has a built in fan that may be connected to an external power source or to the battery connections. My RT2 came from a different batch than the production units as the fan will come on when a 6 cell pack is placed in the tray, According to Trinity this does no harm to the pack as it is how the units used internally at Trinity are wired.

The Indi Activator requires your packs to be built in a certain configuration and will only handle 6 cell packs, side by side or saddle. It does have lights to indicate discharge, however.

My thoughts: I love my vintage Trinity tray. When I was moving around the country and not doing much racing I left a pack in the tray for over a year with no damage. I can discharge 4 cell and 6 cell packs just by dropping them in the tray…not worrying about which way to put the pack in the tray. For me the Indi tray was the worst and at $18.95 not worth it. None of my packs were built to accommodate the tray. There are some racers that absolutely love the Indi tray and have one for each pack but I guess it's not my style, Don't get me wrong here the tray does what it is supposed to do and does it well, but I'm not going to rebuild all my packs and rewire my cars to use it. Also, I race alot of 4 cell 12th scale and this tray is completely useless for that type of racing. The RT2 on the other hand looks to use the same method of discharge that the vintage tray uses with the inclusion of a fan. I have had more than one Trinity Team driver tell me the vintage tray was the best tray out there and now they have improved it. The only draw back to the RT2 is the $50 price… can buy alot of light bulbs.

Here are some pictures of the 3 trays:
