Radio Control Racers
Ultra 3D Radio Control Racers (RCR) -http://www.sierra.com/attractions/titles/rcracing/-
Installation: Installation was a breeze. I just dropped the CD into the drive, got a choice of small or large install choices and waited for the files to copy. Preferences: This section lets you select controller type, race type, length, etc. I tried to select my Thrustmaster T1 wheel and pedal but this combination would not work correctly. You can also turn off the power ups (makes the game kinda arcade like) and select up to three computer opponents and vehicle types --single vehicle type or mixed. Sounds: The engine noise sounds like a gas truck compared to an electric buggy. Tracks: Eight tracks are included: Frog Pond, Under Construction, Hillbilly Hill, Backyard Track, RC Pro Extreme, Mini-golf Track, Haunted Track and Ultimate RC. The first four are included in the Amateur Circuit and the last four in the Professional Circuit. More on circuits later. Game Play: When you select a single track to race a choice of easy or hard is given. According to the manual, the hard setting is modeled on actual RC cars and trucks. The first time through I was trying my Thrustmaster wheel and pedals on the Hillbilly track with a buggy that sorta lookedlike a B3. The pedals must not have calibrated correctly because the buggy was at full throttle 100% of the time…major donut fest. I went back and selected the keyboard and tried again. You get a drivers stand point of view when running the tracks with the exception of some obstacles that block your view on parts of the track --outhouse, still, etc. Using the keyboard it was really hard to compare the game to a real RC car. I've decided next to try and find the Traxxas FreeWheel which is a joystick in the shape of a radio and test that out. Anyway, using the hard setting I found it is very difficult to control the cars. They just tend to do donuts. I changed the setting to easy and it was only a little better. I also used a standard joystick which turned out to be easier than the wheel/pedals. I am really starting to believe the only way to enjoy this game is with the Traxxas Free Wheel or the Serpent system which allows you to use your actual radio as a joystick. |
